WIGAN ATHLETIC UNDER 21s 0
DERBY COUNTY UNDER 21s 0
Wigan Athletic's Under 21 side saw out their final home game of the Professional Development League Two North campaign with a 0-0 draw in a close fought game as chances were hard to come by.
For the majority of the game Latics looked the more likely to break the deadlock as Jesjua Angoy and Rakish Bingham looked lively going forward.
They almost linked up just moments into the game when Angoy beat the full back down the right and found Bingham in the box but, the striker failed to connect with the ball as it came in low.
It was Bingham who created the first half chance of the game when he received the ball on the left edge of the area with his back to goal, swiveled on the ball and fired low towards the far corner but failed to test Mats Morch in the Derby goal.
Two minutes before the break, Jack Phillips fired just over the cross bar after Derby could only clear a corner to the midfielder on the edge of the area.
Phillips was making just his fourth appearance of the season for the Under 21s, but he impressed with his speed of though on the ball and ability to retain possession.
In the second half a double substitution of Guillermo Andres and Joey Johnson for Bingham and Angoy almost paid off when Spanish striker Andres tested Morch with a curling effort towards the bottom corner from just inside the left edge of the penalty area.
With eight minutes to go his fellow sub Johnson also tested Morch with a stinging left footed volley and that was to be the last meaningful effort of the game as both teams settled for a point each.
Following the game Under 21 coach Graham Barrow said:
"It was a difficult afternoon because the pitch was a little cut up with it being near the end of the season and we couldn't really get going.
"We had some chances that we probably should have put away and that sums up how our season has gone."
