Emmerson Boyce determined to battle for survival.

“We know exactly what’s at stake and we know that only winning will do now,” said Emmerson Boyce after yesterday’s 2-0 defeat to West Ham United at Upton Park.

On the outcome of the game the 33-year-old said:

“It was disappointing because we went to Upton Park determined to get a result but we didn’t perform as well as we know we can.

“It was an important day for us in the league and we didn’t feel like we got going, we knew the physical threat of West Ham and we just didn’t cope with it.

“We couldn’t convert our chances, we had enough to score a few goals and the difference was that West Ham scored their chances.”

With five games left for Latics in the league this season, Boyce believes there are enough points left to be won to seal survival in the Premier League.

“There are a lot of points still to be won and we need to make sure we start collecting them in the next game.

“It would have taken some pressure off if we had won against West Ham but it wasn’t to be and it just means we need to try even harder and play better against Tottenham next weekend.”

Experience and desire were two attributes that Boyce said will be needed in the run in to the end of the season.

“It’s down to us now to make sure that this football club stays in the Premier League.

“We’ve been through it before and we know what we need to do.

“This is another challenge for the team and it is time to rise to that challenge and get the points to secure safety.”
