A unique collaboration with the University of Chester has seen Marketing Undergraduates enjoying a valuable experience of transferring knowledge from the classroom to practice, with a joint project helping to build brand awareness and supporter relationships through Wigan Athletic’s official young supporters club, Team Latics.
An Apprentice-style format involving over 40 first year students based at the Warrington Campus saw groups presenting their research and promotional ideas last week, based on the 'Wigan Experience' to a panel of judges made up of Terry Smith, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Chester University, Neil Ryan, Wigan Athletic’s Head of Marketing & Retail, and Young Supporters Marketing Manager Katherine Littlewood.
Terry Smith explained the benefits that such an event can provide for the students, saying:
'The project provided a great opportunity for students to integrate real-life marketing practice into their University industry portfolio with work being used towards their degree assessments.'
Katherine Littlewood went on to explain:
“Engaging with this group of marketing students helps us gain fresh insight into ways in which we can continue to engage with our existing and new young supporters.
"We are always striving to make Team Latics the best it can be.”
All the students who took part in the project will receive match tickets to see Latics play Norwich City on Saturday 30 March.
The winning group (pictured above) selected by the judging panel, received match day hospitality for the game against the Canaries.
