Latics legend and Under 21 coach speaks of his pride at watching Callum McManaman score at Goodison Park on Saturday.

For three and a half years Graham Barrow has worked with Callum McManaman in the Under 21 team.

The forward has played for Barrow’s side a few times this season as well and has been in top form but for his mentor Saturday was the icing on the cake.

“I was filled with pride when Callum scored and I was just so pleased for him because he’s worked so hard for it and he’s a wonderful lad to work with,” said Barrow.

“Whenever you have a hand in a young player coming along it’s always a proud moment.

“When you see a player prosper in the game it’s almost like watching your own son.”

Everyone will have their own memories of their celebrations at the time of McManaman’s goal which sent Latics 2-0 up and for Barrow it was an out of character moment.

“For the first time in a while I didn’t control my emotions very well on Saturday and I was up of my seat.

“It’s usually a bit of a clap and keep going sort of thing but the way that Callum races through matching Distin for pace and clipping the ball past the keeper just had me onto my feet.

“When he picked the ball up we were sat down and then as he gets closer and closer to goal everyone gradually rose to their feet it, it was the type of feeling that Charles N’Zogbia used to give you when he scored goals.

“It’s what dreams are made of and his dream came true on the day.”

You can read an extended interview with Graham Barrow in Sunday's Newcastle United match day programme as he talks about the development and talent in his team as well as the reward of playing at the DW Stadium next Monday night against Sheffield Wednesday.
