Jordi Gomez rounded Latics’ historic FA Cup quarter final victory at Goodison Park against Everton in style with a perfectly placed finish from the edge of the area.
After the game the Man of the Match stopped to tell us just how much it means to the team.
“I’m really happy and every played so well,” said Gomez.
“We haven’t done anything yet though, going to Wembley is fantastic for everyone and for the first time ever we’ve got to the semi-finals but we still have to see out our aims.
“Getting to the semi-final will just make everyone hungry to go again for the final.”
His beaming smile outside the away dressing room wasn’t going to disappear and his pride was clear.
“It’s going to be special for everyone at the club and all the supporters and it’s going to be a big occasion in our season when we go to Wembley.
“It’s going to give the team so much confidence and we need to use it in the league and in the semi-final.
“Defensively every worked really hard and then going forward we were clinical which is something we want to do every week now.”
With the Man of the Match award in his hand Gomez said:
“It’s a big bottle so I don’t know if I’ll drink it all but I’m really happy to get a reward like this from the game.
“We could have had 11 Man of the Match awards though because everyone worked really hard.
“It was a complete performance from the team and everyone should be very proud of our club.”
Gomez’s goal rounded off a chaotic three minutes and he recalled the moment that he made it 3-0 by saying:
“It was great build up from the team and Arouna (Kone) played me the ball and I just hit it and there it was inside the net, it was amazing.
“Mine was the third goal so every was really happy but at that moment we just realised that we needed to make sure the goals counted.
“We were very confident that we could finish the game at 3-0 and our hard work proved that.”
In the moments after the game the whole team went over to show their appreciation to the 2,000 plus supporters that travelled to Goodison Park, the 27-year-old was happy to have them on side.
“It’s great to see the fans so happy and I’m glad they enjoyed their day, I think I’m winning people over now.”
