Wigan Athletic’s Under 21 team could not maintain their recent unbeaten record in the Professional Development League Two, slipping to a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday afternoon.
Featuring three senior players including Adrian Lopez, Nouha Dicko and Ryo Miyaichi, who played his first game for the club since picking up a groin injury in November, Latics threatened but couldn’t find a way past Jordan Smith in the Forest goal.
Graham Barrow’s side were handed their big chance midway through the first half, when Wilfried Gnahore handled inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot.
Up stepped Adam Buxton
, but the defender was denied by the keeper who guessed the right way.
Dicko and Miyaichi linked well up front, with the Japan winger a constant threat before coming off at the break, and the French forward producing fine saves from Smith having found himself in good positions around the penalty area.
Marko Marosi in the Latics goal was in equally good form, denied several Forest opportunities in a game that looked to be heading for a goalless draw.
That was before the home side broke the deadlock on the hour mark, Ben Osborn deceiving the defence and squaring for Gnahore to redeem himself having conceded a first half penalty and convert from close range.
Latics: Marosi; Campabadal (Johnson, 57), Lopez, Ainscough (Orsula, 72), Buxton, Morris, Sumner, Chow, Dicko, R. Watson, Miyaichi (Boothman, 46)
Subs: Cottrill, Bingham
