Wigan Athletic’s convincing and stylish 3-0 victory over Reading last weekend has been voted the LMA F&C Investments Performance of the Week.
An Arouna Kone’s brace and Maynor Figueroa’s first league goal of the season secured Latics’ first win of the year at the Madejski Stadium, and moved the team out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
Afterwards the LMA’s five-man panel, consisting of Sir Alex Ferguson, Howard Wilkinson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, decided the performance was the pick of bunch from last weekend’s fixtures in the Barclays Premier League and npower Football League.
Roberto Martinez said: “The award is fantastic recognition for the players’ and fans’ efforts last weekend in a massive fixture for us.
“We showed great composure and control in our play to overcome difficult opposition in the prime of their season, scoring some real classy goals in the process.
“I would like to thank the panel for their votes and hopefully we’ll be able to collect the award again before the end of the season.”
Latics made award history last season by becoming the first team to claim the accolade three times in the same month, following stunning victories over Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United.
It is the first time they have collected the award this season.
