CREWE ALEXANDRA UNDER 18s 1
WIGAN ATHLETIC UNDER 18s 0
After early chances went astray, Wigan Athletic's Under 18s were edged out 1-0 away from home against Crewe Alexandra in a game that looked certain for a point or more.
Latics called mainly upon first years for the trip and also included Under 16s Sean Harrison and Sam Cosgrove from the start.
It was the tall figure of Cosgrove who could have had Latics 2-0 up inside the opening exchanges with two clear cut chances.
The first saw the striker fire narrowly over the cross bar, before forcing former Latics' Under 18 goalkeeper Robbie Johnson into a solid save in a one-on-one.
Crewe's main threat was aerial but Latics' defence was capable in preventing the hosts from troubling Michael Cottrill between the sticks.
Under 16 defender Sean Harrison stood out at the back as his side held firm.
Chances continued to be created in the second half but the decision making in the final third let Latics down as they could have gone on to win.
On 65 minutes Crewe sniffed out their best chance and converted when a clearance from Jamie Gibson was fortuitously blocked by Alex forward Fraser Murdoch who was clear through against Cottrill and slotted home for the games only goal.
Despite defeat, coach Joe Parkinson was pleased with the sides' competitiveness and believes it should have been Latics coming out on top.
"Every week now we're competing to a really high standard and me and John (Doolan) are really pleased with the progress that's been made.
"We've used a lot of our first years recently who have been good and some of our injured players came back in the game which is a massive positive.
"I don't think we deserved to lose, if anything we should have at least got a point but we'll keep working and make sure we continue our good form at the moment."
