The arrival of Wigan Athletic’s latest signing Joel Robles has been met with messages of support from his team-mates, manager and fans after the club finalised the paper work on his a six months deal from Atletico Madrid this morning.
News of the deal emerged from the Atletico side last night and the club can now confirm that the transfer has been completed this morning and that the 22 year old is eligible to join up with the squad in time for tomorrow’s Barclays Premier league game at home to Sunderland.
The 6ft 5ins stopper impressed last season on loan to Mohamed Diame’s former club Rayo Vallecano and made 13 appearances, having also appeared twice for Atletico. Roberto Martinez has also been impressed with Robles during a two week period on trial at Latics and says:
“Joel is a great talent and is in an exciting moment of his personal career. His experiences at Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano will help him to bring real competition to the goalkeeping department at the club and we hope this can be a productive period for both him and us. We are delighted to have him on board.”
Robles himself said: “I am so happy to be able to start my career in England. The Premier League is a dream for any player in the world and when you see other players from Spain and what they have done in England, it gives us hope that we can be successful here.

A former team-mate of Manchester United’s David de Gea and an international at Under 16, Under 17, Under 21 and now Under 23 level, Robles joins Mike Pollitt and Ali Al Habsi in competing for a place between the sticks, but a challenge Al Habsi is looking forward to, saying: “It’s great to see Joel join us on loan, I wish him all the best.”
