Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s latest signing is a partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University that will help inspire young people in Wigan to become business leaders of the future.
The University is working alongside the Trust to deliver the Latics Enterprise Academy project, a Premier League backed initiative that uses the model of Wigan Athletic to teach young people about business.
The scheme is open to all secondary schools in Wigan and gives school children an insight into the running of a Premier League Football Club. Participants get to visit the DW Stadium and also receive match tickets to Wigan Athletic home games.
Through the partnership will also get the chance to work alongside Sports Business students from Manchester Metropolitan University who will act as mentors and role models to the young people on the ten week course.
The University will also provide guest speakers, marketing support and funding as part of the agreement.
The scheme is being facilitated through Manchester Metropolitan University Social Xchange. The Xchange has been set up to help students of the Business and Law School gain meaningful and worthwhile short term work experience, which will hopefully give them a greater chance of gaining employment when they graduate.
Principal Lecturer in Sports Business at Manchester Metropolitan University Steve Mansfield said: “We are delighted to be working with Wigan Athletic Community Trust on such a worthwhile scheme.
“The Latics Enterprise Academy is a great way to show young people how business’s operate and also the different careers in the leisure industry that could be available to them.
“Our students will also gain valuable experience and be able to put into practise some of the things they learn during their degrees.”
Tom Flower, Head of Community at Wigan Athletic Community Trust said: “The partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University will add massive value to the work we are doing in secondary schools as part of the Latics Enterprise Academy.
“Hopefully the scheme will not only inspire Wigan young people to want to become involved in business when they leave school but also attend University as well.”
The Latics Enterprise Academy is part of the national Premier League Enterprise Academy project which is backed by the Government’s Department of Business of Business and Innovation and Skills.
