Latics’ left side clinched a first away victory for the Under 21s as Danny Redmond and Steven Boothman netted either side of Sheffield Wednesday’s goal.

A controlled performance saw out the result in the typical passing style.

Latics made a solid start to the game with heavy possession but, couldn’t find a breakthrough in the opening half an hour.

Two minutes later and pressure on Wednesday’s back line paid off.

Jack Phillips harassed left back Mayo Balogun into a hurried, long clearance which was chested down precisely by Adam Buxton on the half way line.

The defender played the ball across to Boothman on the left who threaded the ball into Redmond’s path after a well-timed forward run.

The 21-year-old sold the goalkeeper into going to ground and chipped the ball over his falling body to nestle the ball into the net for 1-0.

Despite constant control, Wednesday equalised 10 minutes later when a ball from midfield deflected off Jamie McCormack’s studs and into the path of Matt Fletcher.

Fletcher was surprised to see the ball at his feet and smashed his shot from inside the area which was well saved by the goalkeeper but, the save fell into the path of Jarrod Kyle who finished into an empty net.

After half time Latics continued to press their hosts and Rakish Bingham provided a powerful performance with a strong work ethic.

The forward then had a goal ruled out for offside after receiving the ball from Boothman, turning the defender and lashing the ball in.

It wasn’t to stop the flow of the game though and soon after Boothman had put Latics back on top.

His constant pressure on defenders paid off and with a slack pass Wednesday had put Boothman straight in on goal.

The 20-year-old twisted and turned the defence inside out and then finished finely to put his side back ahead.

From then on it was a case of ‘do as you know best’ and Latics saw out the victory with impressive possession in a pleasing performance.
