Latics held to draw in compact game

Latics continued to progress in the Under 18 Professional Development League in what was a controlled performance but, one that lacked goal mouth action.

The home side were dominant for large spells against an in-your-face Sheffield Wednesday team that didn’t allow for time on the ball.

It was a battle in midfield that prevented many real chances but, Latics had the best one when Brad Anderson played Ryan Jennings in down the right only for the keeper to make a solid stop from the substitutes’ strike.

Latics had little to deal with at the back, with Michael Cottrill having a comfortable game and the only pressure on him coming from occasional set pieces.

The game was played out scoreless despite opening up towards the end and coach Joe Parkinson was pleased with the result but, knows the team can provide better performances.

“It was probably a match which deserved to end in a draw,” said Parkinson.

“We passed the ball in our usual style which is what we want the lads to do but, the chances just didn’t come for us.

“The result was good and we will continue to work on the performances which up to now have been very impressive.”

Latics: Cottrill, Leigh, Mason, Wilson, Gibson (Johnstone 45), Meadows (Jennings 30), Ainscough, Flores, Anderson, Christian, Hamilton (Thompson 70)
Unused subs: Unsworth, Gibbons
