Ben Watson had to be stretchered down the tunnel during the first half of today’s game against Liverpool after suffering a suspected fracture to his shin in a collision with Raheem Sterling.
“The injury to Ben Watson is a really nasty blow and what we believe to be a broken leg.
“We will have to assess the injury and the treatment that Ben will need before we can judge how long he is going to be missing.
“Ben was starting to have a very strong season and was putting in some commanding performances and it is a real shame to lose him to an injury like that.”
On Gary Caldwell’s injury Martinez added.
“Gary is a little concern as well because he has a problem with his hamstring and we will assess him and get a better diagnosis on Monday.”
The gaffer drew positives from today’s first half performance which saw Latics dominate for long spells.
“We looked very comfortable and the only aspect we were not happy with is that we didn't have much joy in the final third after the domination in possession.
“We weren't as sharp as we usually are and that made a big difference because when you are on top in a game you have to be able to score.
“The positive first half shows that we are ready to go anywhere in the Premier League and be ourselves.
“There were a few things that didn’t go our way when we were still in a position to get back into the game but, we have to focus on our performance rather than things that are out of our control.”
