“I feel the fittest that I've ever been in my career and I've gained great experience here having played in various positions on the pitch,” said the 28-year-old.
“Without playing regularly it is sometimes difficult to keep the levels up every week but, I really enjoy coming in early and doing extra bits to maintain myself and be on top of my game.
“I’m really enjoying my time here and looking forward to the challenge of trying to get a regular starting place in the team.”
Since his arrival at Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2011 Jones has adapted to different positions on the pitch and he believes that his style of play suits that versatility.
“My style is a mix of being calm and composed but, upping the tempo when needed.
“An example of that has been in the cup games because we have dominated possession in midfield.
“ I've had experiences before of games against lower ranked opposition and when we played Bradford it was a game for cool heads, unluckily on the day we couldn't get the goal that would have opened the game up.”
With Jones’ own admission of his football progressing, he said he owes a lot to his manager Roberto Martinez.
“The manager leads by example with the calm and considered manner that he approaches the game and that definitely rubs off on the players and myself in particular.
“The gaffer’s influence on the way the team plays is fantastic because his encouragement to get the team playing the ball from the goalkeeper through the whole of the team makes everyone enjoy being on the pitch.”
