The club is delighted to announce that Chairman Dave Whelan has been given a lifetime achievement award at the 2012 North West Football Awards.
The announcement was made on Monday evening at the North West Football Awards Dinner, held at Lancashire Cricket Club in Manchester.
Mr Whelan was on hand to receive the award and said: “This has come as a total surprise to me. The club is up for Community Awards and I thought I was coming simply to receive those.
“This has been a shock, but I am very grateful. I think what we have done at Wigan Athletic is a bit of a fairy tale and it is one that we hope can carry on for many years to come. We were at the bottom of the old fourth division when I bought the club in 1995, and to think that this is our eighth consecutive season in the Barclays Premier League is unbelievable.”
Also on the night, Wigan Athletic's Community Trust were nominated in two categories. The 'Train with Latics' scheme which helps provide unemployed people gain new qualification and skills, was up for the Community Initiative of the Year award, eventually won by Burnley.
The work of the Community Trust was also 'highly commended' in the Community Club of the Year award, won by Everton, for initiatives which have for example seen the players donate £1million to the Wigan Youth Zone project.
