“It was good to come into such a game because there were lots of possibilities to get the ball in wide areas and get the crosses into the box,” said the 28-year-old.
“Very early on in the game I thought to myself that this is the sort of match I can have an impact on because there was a lot of space down the wings.
“The crossing needed to be 100% precise to get us a goal and it was a real shame that we couldn’t score from one of them.
“We needed a little bit more luck to get a goal from the crosses because West Brom defended really well in the air.”
With Latics dominating possession in regular spells throughout the afternoon, Stam believes the game could have gone either way but, understood why Latics couldn’t secure a result.
“This was a game that we didn’t really deserve to lose because overall we played quite well.
“In the first half we had a few chances to score goal and we put them under pressure in the second half as well.
“West Brom are a good team and played well but, we just lacked that last little bit in our play that would get us the goals we needed.”
On a personal note he added.
“I enjoyed getting the time on the pitch to show the gaffer what I can do.
“The intensity was really high against West Brom and really enjoyable to play in.
“We want to keep those levels of intensity up now and if we can then we can be a match for any team.”
