Martinez buoyant after deserved victory at White Hart Lane

Roberto Martinez hailed a dominating performance from his players that brought about Wigan Athletic’s second ever win at White Hart Lane and secured back-to-back wins in the Barclays Premier League.

“From start to finish it was an impressive performance and we showed exactly what we’re capable of,” said Martinez.

“I’m sure many people will look at the result and assume we nicked something from the game, but the truth is that we were dominant, the first-half in particular.

“We created three open opportunities which Brad Friedel had to be at his best to stop but the reaction in the second-half was a joy to see, doing the things we had to and towards the end of the game showing great concentration in the box as Spurs came forward.

“There was incredible work ethic from the players and fantastic phases of football which speaks volumes of the mentality and ability of this squad to do that away from home in a place like White Hart Lane.”

After seeing numerous chances go begging in the first-half, Martinez was relieved to see Ben Watson pop up with the winner shortly before the hour-mark but believed three points were there for the taking for his team.

He said: “Half-time was an important moment; I knew that if we could keep a clean-sheet then we would win the game. Every time we went forward we found it easy to open up their defence and all we had to be was brave on the ball to take even more from our possession.

“We created so many from that play that it was funny our goal came from a set-piece and it was just good to see Ben Watson in the right place at the right time to put it in the back of the net.

“Back-to-back wins sends a clear message about the quality of the players at the Club.

"In recent weeks we’ve had some ‘nearly-performances’ but not quite complete ones but today we showed from start to finish a level that we need to aim to be at week after week.

“The mentality of the players was fantastic and it was a pleasure to watch them enjoying their football and picking up a great result.

“The squad want to really achieve something this year and show these standards from week to week.”
