Midfielder named in Republic of Ireland line-up for World Cup Qualifier

James McCarthy will make his fifth start for Republic of Ireland on Friday night after Manager Giovanni Trapattoni named the 21-year-old in his starting line-up to face Germany in their World Cup Qualification match at the Aviva Stadium.

The Latics midfielder will again play a prominent role for his country having helped them to a 2-1 win against Kazakhstan in their opening group match back in September; the first competitive international McCarthy had started for Ireland.

It will be the seventh time McCarthy has appeared for his country since making his debut at The Emirates Stadium against Brazil in February 2010, shortly after making his first start in the Barclays Premier League for Latics, against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After taking on Germany on Friday night, Republic of Ireland will then travel to the Faroe Islands in their third Group C match on Tuesday.
