Arouna Kone and Franco di Santo ran Everton ragged in the first half of yesterday’s 2-2 draw and playmaker Shaun Maloney explains how having them in top form gives Latics a huge advantage.
“The front two are so vital in the way that we play and I thought they were outstanding in the first half.
“Arouna scored and set up a goal and Franco showed he is in top form.
“If those two perform like that all season it will give us such an advantage over teams in games.”
Star Man: Maloney in control against Everton on Saturday
Maloney himself got an assist with his cross being turned in for the opening goal.
“It was nice to get an assist and it is those types of positions that I want to be getting into in matches.
“I want to get some more assists this season by getting into those positions.”
“It felt a little like the games towards the end of last season because of the intensity in the game and the work rate that we put in.
“It was important to stop the run of defeats for our confidence.
“If we continue to work like that and be as brave as we have been on the ball then hopefully we will start a run of good results when we come back from internationals.”
Deadly Duo: Di Santo and Kone celebrate another strike
In the dying embers of the game Maloney had the chance to clinch all three points for Latics, a miss that he is determined to rectify.
“It is a big miss, I probably had more time than I thought but I should score and it is something that I’ll dwell on because we could have won the game.
“I’m disappointed with that and it is something I will look to put right in the next games.”
