Park Life - Midfielder James McCarthy shares his delight with Capital One Cup progress and previews the trip to Sunderland at the weekend.

Having rested on Tuesday night as his team-mates completed the 4-1 rout away at West Ham United, the Republic of Ireland international was happy to see the depth of the squad in full flow.

“It was a great result because it isn’t an easy place to go.

“It’s a great achievement to score four goals away from home and it shows how strong in depth we are.

“We made a few changes and the boys who have come in have done really well which creates a good headache for the gaffer to have because of the competition for places.”

McCarthy admitted that hard work is even more crucial in order to retain a place in the team after such an impressive performance.

“It’s great to have competition in the squad because it pushes you that extra bit to impress the gaffer and stay in the team.

“I’m looking forward to Sunderland at the weekend but after that performance midweek I have to work even harder now to make sure I’m in the team.

He added.

“We’ve been playing well in every game and sometimes it is a bit hard to take when you play so well but don’t get the rewards.

“We’ll kick on and turn those performances into results.

“Sunderland is a tough place to go and they’ll be really up for the game after what happened the last time we played them at the Stadium of Light.

“The way we set up favours playing away from home sometimes but, it is no different from being at home because the fans give us great support wherever we play and have always been right behind us.”
