Young Latics undone as the Tykes capitalise on errors

A penalty after 10 minutes set the tone for the day, it was followed up by another goal in the first half by Kenna Ngoma and then Erico Sousa rounded off the scoring after a defensive mix-up just seven minutes from time.

Latics were controlled and firm for long spells during the game but, lapses in concentration cost them dear.

With the team looking to be in control of possession, a pass from left-back Bram Johnstone into Andrew Mason wasn’t dealt with and Barnsley striker George Maris stole the ball off the centre half in the middle of the penalty area.

Goalkeeper Calvin Hare had to think fast but Maris skipped the ball beyond him and drew the foul, penalty said the referee.

Brad Abbott stepped up to smash the ball in for 1-0.

As the half went on Latics grew into the performance, with Joel Kerwin playing his usual strong game and Joey Johnson looking dangerous in the front three.

Latics had chances from range but nothing concrete and Barnsley were set to take advantage again.

This time it was a ball over the top from the Barnsley right full back that wasn’t clear by either Mason or Michael Wilson.

The ball came to Maris again who cut it back from the left side of the six-yard box to Ngoma who timed his run well to slot the ball past Hare.

At 2-0 up Barnsley set out to frustrate Latics, who stayed true to their game and tried to be patient in their build-up.

But with the game falling away Barnsley made them pay again.

It was another long ball over the top of the defence that wasn’t diffused and with a ricochet off Matty Hamilton from Wilson’s clearance the ball fell to Erico Sousa who struck a half volley beyond the ‘keeper.

After the game John Doolan was left frustrated by the mistakes but believes the results are only a matter of time.

“We shouldn’t be making errors like that.

“Other than the goals, Barnsley didn’t have many chances and I can’t really complain too much because overall the lads played really well again.

“We need to be a bit sharper going forward but like I said we did well for long spells, if we carry on performing the way we did the results will come.”

Latics team: Hare, Gibson (Leigh 78), Mason, Wilson, Johnstone, Meadows (Ainscough 69), Christian, Kerwin, Johnson, Flores (Hamilton 50), Anderson
