Groups of young people from Wigan have been receiving free football coaching with Wigan Athletic Community Trust this summer thanks to the support of Wigan and Leigh Housing.

Latics in the Community coaches have been working with up to 80 young people a week at the free courses at Westfield Primary School, on Montrose Avenue.

And to celebrate the success of the programme Latics midfielder James McCarthy was a surprise guest this week.

The Irish international signed autographs for all the participants before joining in a shooting demonstration with them.

He said: “It was great to see so many kids enjoying themselves and the fact that they have been receiving the coaching for free is even better.

To run the programme Wigan Athletic Community Trust received a grant from Wigan and Leigh Housing’s Better Neighbourhood fund.

Wigan and Leigh Housing also support Wigan Athletics’ Kickz project in Hag Fold in Atherton.

Head of Community, Tom Flower said: “We have worked alongside Wigan and Leigh Housing for a number of years on projects such as Kickz and it was great that they have been able to support this holiday provision during the summer.”
