Latics midfielder James McCarthy met a group of young people last month who have just completed a three month training programme with the Club’s Latics in the Community scheme.

25 young people between the ages of 16 – 18 have completed a level 2 qualification in Sport and Active Leisure this summer and meeting James was a reward for their efforts.

Seven of the young people have now managed to gain full time employment while the rest will get the chance to complete a FA Level One coaching badge in football.

James said: “The lads were great; I understand they weren’t in college or at work before they started the course and so the fact that they have been able to get some qualifications while working with the Club is just fantastic.”

The Train with Latics programme has been delivered in partnership with Pro-Co at the Montrose Skills Hub and from September the Community Trust will be running a new a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Leadership through Sport from the centre on Montrose Avenue.

The course is open to young people between the ages of 16 – 18 and by taking part they will get the chance to:

  • Train with FA and UEFA qualified coaches
  • Play matches against other Premier League and Football League Clubs
  • Complete a FA Level 1 Coaching award

Everyone who takes part in the course will receive travel expenses and lunch when they are at Montrose and receive Wigan Athletic Training Kit to where during the programme.
