A goal third minute goal by Ryan Jennings looked to be setting a tone to the game as Latics put in a dominant display but, were caught out by a Jemal Wiseman strike on 66 minutes, before hearts were broken two minutes into injury time as Coventry defender Alex Donald provided the dramatic finish on Saturday afternoon.

It was a game with plenty of chances for John Doolan’s side and it took no time at all to create the first of many, when Latics opened the scores just three minutes into the game.

After countering an early Coventry attack, Latics broke and with one swift move, it was the forward Jennings who scored with a low finish past goalkeeper Alex Gott.

Latics could have been three or four up before half time as they carved out chance after chance with Michael Wilson heading just over the cross bar and Jordan Flores flashing a 20 yard effort over as well.

Having taken a 1-0 lead into half time, Latics looked to come out and build on it and could have been 2-0 in front after Bram Johnstone free kick was saved but, in the ensuing melee it looked like Jennings had been fouled for a penalty.

As Latics continued to build up the pressure, they were caught out when Jemal Wiseman equalised just after the hour mark.

The afternoon was proving itself to be a very unfortunate one as with just moments left and deep into stoppage time, a Coventry free kick from 20 yards was saved but not cleared and City defender Donald bundled the ball over the line.

Despite defeat, Doolan was pleased with his side’s efforts.

“We completely dominated the first half and we came out in the second in the same frame of mind.

“It looked like we should have had a penalty from Bram’s free kick and obviously that would have given us some more momentum.

“To lose in the last minute was very harsh on us but I’m really proud of the lads”
