SALFORD CITY 2
Thompson 46, 85 (pen)
WIGAN ATHLETIC YOUTH TEAM 3
A quiet first half at Salford City's Moor Lane ground was followed by 45 minutes of excitement as five goals were scored and Latics rode out to victory despite a late penalty for the hosts.
Ryan Meadows and Joey Johnson brought Latics back from behind before Paddy Christian's stunning lob extended the lead.
John Doolan and his side were welcomed by former Latics player and current Salford manager Darren Sheridan whose side had the best of the opening exchanges.
Salford played the ball around well in possession but with little clear cut chances in the first half, the teams headed in at half time level.
It wasn't the same story for the second half and the scoring started almost instantly when a long ball from kick off caught Latics' defence out and left Chris Thompson to make it 1-0.
There was a positive reaction from then on as Latics upped the tempo and began to take control of the game.
On the hour mark Latics were level when a bouncing ball inside the area was poked in by Meadows after a melee of blocked shots on goal.
Just 15 minutes later and Johnson made it 2-0.
He saw his moment to shoot from the edge of the area and hit the ball well but, was given some fortune as the shot slipped through the Salford goalkeeper's arms.
The third goal with around 10 minutes to play, came from a moment of inspiration by midfielder Christian who capitalised on a poor clearance and lobbed the 'keeper from all of 35 yards.
Despite conceding a dubious late penalty, Latics went on to win yet another game in pre-season and it was a good test for the youngsters against another Evo-Stik League side.
Latics manager Doolan was pleased with the way his players reacted to the early second half set back.
"We worked very hard in the second half and controlled the tempo well.
"We got caught cold from the kick off but the rotation at around 50 minutes sparked us into life.
"It was another physical task against a senior side and we stood up to it whilst also playing the Wigan Athletic way."
