Latics on the end of harsh defeat after one-sided performance
BLACKBURN ROVERS 2
WIGAN ATHLETIC 1
Report by Paul Chialton
How Latics came away from Ewood Park with nothing is a mystery after producing one of the most one-sided performances of the season.
Brushing off the disappointment of the previous week's display at Craven Cottage Roberto Martinez's men were outstanding from start to finish but just didn't get the breaks their work deserved.
Charles N'Zogbia had a first-half goal unfairly disallowed for a push on Morten Gamst Pedersen and Hugo Rodallega was denied a penalty after the break after being tripped inside the area.
The Frenchman had got Latics back into the game with 15 minutes remaining, firing a 30-yard free-kick off the post and beyond the helpless Paul Robinson.
Robinson had denied Momo Diame shortly after the break when the midfielder breezed into the area but couldn't steer his shot into the goal.
But it wasn't refereeing decisions that shaped the game. Latics dominated throughout, giving Blackburn the run-around and looking by far the superior team.
Jordi Gomez and Steve Gohouri came into the starting line-up and made a huge difference. The Spaniard dictating play in the centre and outclassing the home midfield.
At right-back Gohouri was awesome. Solid and confident both going backwards and forwards, a shame he picked up his fifth yellow of the season and will miss the mid-week game against Liverpool.
Ali Al Habsi pulled off two fantastic saves to keep his side in the game but could not thwart Gamst Pedersen's free-kick or Jason Roberts' close-range effort which looked suspiciously offside.
Such a harsh result after another brilliant away performance and how Rovers got anything from the game is baffling. Latics deserved everything from Ewood Park but must take this game on the chin and produce the same kind of effort on Wednesday night when Liverpool arrive at the DW Stadium.
